LUCA GIORDANO, A PENITENT HERMIT WITH FIGURES (?) (RECTO); MONK HOLDING A CHILD (VERSO), PEN AND BROWN INK (VERSO), BROWN WASH (RECTO); BLACK CHALK (VERSO), ON BLUE PAPER
This sheet, with studies of a hermit kneeling and of two women with children, can be compared with a drawing by Luca Giordano in Avignon (inv. 996-7-305; see S. Béguin, M. Di Giampaolo and P. Malgouyres, Disegni della donazione Marcel Puech al Museo Calvet di Avignone, Naples, 1998, no. 100, ill.). On both sheets, the artist sketched the figures with pen and ink, yet the figures in the Avignon drawing are larger and the composition more clearly developed. The hermit saint can be identified with Saint John Chrysostom, as has been suggested by David Ekserdjian (op. cit., p. 56, n. 3), and the scene an episode of his life.
