ARMAND RASSENFOSSE, DESIGN FOR LES FLEURS DU MAL BY CHARLES BAUDELAIRE, GRAPHITE, PEN AND BROWN INK, BROWN WASH, STUMPING, SIGNED WITH MONOGRAM AND INSCRIBED
Commissioned by Eugène Rodrigues, president of the Société des Cent Bibliophiles at the end of the 19th century, Rassenfosse illustrated in colour the 158 poems in Charles Baudelaire’s Fleurs du mal, as well as the chapter headings and tables, producing a total of 167 engravings (N. de Rassenfosse, P. Gillissen and M. Wittock, Rassenfosse ou l’esthétique du livre, Brussels, 2016, p. 38). For this colossal undertaking, he combined different printing techniques (sugar engraving, aquatint, drypoint, etc.) before printing in colour. The present drawing is a study for one of them, for the poem ‘La servante au grand cœur dont vous étiez jalouse’. Other examples of preparatory drawings for illustrating his poems are in the Musée du Louvre (inv. RF 54765, RF 54766). The book remains the most famous and sought-after illustrated edition of Les Fleurs du Mal, being the only one in which all the poems are illustrated with original prints (op. cit., p. 42).
