ATTRIBUTED TO JACQUES-GERMAIN SOUFFLOT, PROJECT FOR THE GOVERNOR'S PALACE IN LYON (RECTO); SKETCH WITH A FRAGMENTARY VASE (VERSO), PEN AND BLACK INK, GREY WASH
The drawing shows the Governor's Palace of Lyon, designed by Jacques-Germain Soufflot for Antoine-Michel Perrache as part of the second version of his project for a new district in the southern part of the Presqu'île in Lyon (c. 1769-1774). Soufflot was well familiar with the city, for which he had already built several monuments (including the Hôtel-Dieu, the archbishop's palace and the theater); influential at court, he is best known for having designed and supervised the construction the church of Sainte Geneviève (today's Pantheon) from 1775 onwards. With its vast seventeen-bay facade, punctuated by three avant-corps, the project flattered the Ducs of Villeroy, governors of Lyonnais since 1612, whose coat of arms can be seen on the building's pediment and above the entrance portal. The building of the palace was delayed by financial and political contingencies, and ultimately remained in the sketch stage.
