Further details

ATTRIBUTED TO PAOLO ANESI, RIVER LANDSCAPE WITH THE NOMENTANO BRIDGE AND ST PETER'S BASILICA; RIVER LANDSCAPE WITH PEASANTS AND RUINS, OIL ON CANVAS, A PAIR

A painter of the Roman countryside and its picturesque ruins, Paolo Anesi (1697-1773) first studied in the studio of Giuseppe Chiari (1654-1727), and subsequently with the landscape painter Bernardino Fergioni (1674-1738), at the same time as Andrea Locatelli (1695-1741). He sojourned at least twice in Florence, in 1729 and 1737. It was during the latter stay that one of his patrons, Marchese Carlo Rinuccini (1679-1748), applied on his behalf for admittance to the Accademia, which was accepted without hesitation. For a long time this link with the Tuscan capital mistakenly led art historians to believe that Anesi was Florentine, but apart from these few months in Tuscany, he spent his entire career in Rome.

His clientele came from the highest ranks of European society. In 1731, King Charles-Emmanuel III of Sardinia (1701-1773) bought six of his canvases, and his landscapes featured in the most important Roman collections, including those of the Colonna, Pallavicini, Valenti Gonzaga, Pamphili and Rondinini families. His fame spread to northern Europe thanks to the English aristocrats who went on the 'Grand Tour', the long journey made by young men (and less often women) to educate themselves by visiting the most important sites of Antiquity and the High Renaissance. One such person was the banker Henry Hoare (1677-1725), who bought paintings by Anesi for his new home, Stourhead, known for the beauty of its gardens and the importance of its collection of paintings.

Much of Anesi’s renown was due to the frescoes he painted for Roman villas. In 1749, part of the decoration of the Villa Pamphili was entrusted to him. Around 1760 he was part of a group of artists working on the villa of Cardinal Alessandro Albani (1692-1779), and in 1767 he painted landscapes for the villa of Cardinal Flavio Chigi (1711-1771). It is possible that the present paintings were executed at the same time.
