Further details
ATTRIBUTED TO PIETER VLERICK, VIEW OF SAN SEBASTIANO NEAR ROME AND A VIEW OF THE PALATINE (RECTO-VERSO), PEN AND BROWN INK, INSCRIBED AND DATED
Almost everything we know about the artist comes from the biography written by his pupil, Carel van Mander (1548-1606). Vlerick trained in Antwerp and then worked with Tintoretto (1518-1594) in Venice for four years. He continued on to Rome, where he drew many views of the Eternal City. Few paintings and drawings are preserved, but the present drawing is comparable to a sheet attributed to Vlerick and kept at the Stedelijk Prentenkabinet in Antwerp, Plantin-Moretus Museum (inv. 576; Fiamminghi a Roma 1508/1608, Brussels, Palais des Beaux-Arts and Rome, Palazzo dei Exposizioni, 1995, no. 232, ill.). Another landscape in pen and brown ink, heightened with wash, with the same inscription in this characteristic handwriting at the top center of the sheet, and depicting the Palazzo Nerone can also to be compared with the present sheet (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, inv. 59.73).The view from the palace onto the Palatine is particularly important, as this monument no longer exists.
