Toeput was a painter, engraver and poet of Flemish origin. He trained in Venice, where he studied the works of Veronese (1528-1588) and Tintoretto (1518-1594). He later moved to Treviso and became one of the leading Nordic landscape artists working in the Venice area, producing magnificent landscapes in his studio, all based on studies from nature. As in the present drawing, Toeput often depicted a tree in silhouette in the foreground, beyond which a wide, sun filled landscape can be seen.
