Post lot text ATTRIBUTED TO FRANÇOIS-ANDRÉ VINCENT, TWO EPISODES FROM GIL BLAS BY ALAIN-RENÉ LESAGE : EXPEDITION ON THE MAIN ROAD AND CAPTURE OF THE STOLEN LADY; AND TWO WOMEN TAKEN BY THIEVES, BLACK AND BROWN CHALK, PEN, BROWN WASH, HEIGHTENED WITH WHITE'Fragonardesque' in inspiration, these two drawings are related to two oil paintings in a private collection of the same subject and similar in composition, which Jean-Pierre Cuzin includes in the catalog raisonné of François-André Vincent, dating them to the end of the 1770s, despite 'a few drawing oversights that may make one hesitate about an attribution to the artist' (J.-P. Cuzin, François-André Vincent (1746-1816). Entre Fragonard et David, Paris, 2013, p. 426, no. P346). The subject is taken from an episode of Alain-René Lesage's Gil Blas de Santillane, a picaresque novel first published between 1715 and 1735, which recounts the adventures of a squire who becomes a companion and accomplice of highwaymen.
