MAÎTRE DU FILS PRODIGUE, THE FUNERAL OF PHOCION, BLACK CHALK, PEN AND BROWN INK, GOUACHE HEIGHTENED WITH WHITE

According to Jacques Foucart, the Master of the Prodigal Son is ‘one of the most captivating anonymous artists from the flourishing city of Antwerp at the height of its success’ (‘Tableaux des écoles du Nord: un bilan d'acquisition’, Revue du Louvre et des Musées de France, 33, 1983, p. 360). The artist, who owes his name to the painting of the famous parable The Prodigal Son (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna; inv. 773), was at the head of a prolific workshop that worked, among other things, on the design of tapestries. A number of drawings are attributed to him. The elongated figures in the foreground in front of a wooded landscape and the marked gestures are frequently found in his varied oeuvre, which ranges from history paintings to genre scenes.
