Further details
A PLASTER RELIEF OF 'THE TRIUMPH OF AMPHITRITE', AUGUSTE DE NIEDERHÄUSERN, KNOWN AS RODO
After studying in Switzerland, Auguste de Niederhäusern divided his training in Paris between the studios of Henri Chapu and Alexandre Falguière. In 1892, he became one of the principal assistants to Auguste Rodin, who wrote in the introduction to the catalog of his Retrospective Exhibition in 1913, 'I am very happy to say how much Rodo was a true Sculptor'. It was from this collaboration that Niederhäusern inherited his pseudonym 'Rodo'. From these early years of creation, drawings and two compositions inspired by the 18th-century style are preserved, featuring classical subjects treated in relief: Ceres Initiates Triptolemus into Agriculture (1889) and The Triumph of Amphitrite (1888).
From the beginning of his career, Rodo favored plaster casts over bronze. These editions were few in number (fewer than a dozen), and he almost systematically signed, dated, and dedicated them with the inscription 'to the friend [name]'. For our relief of The Triumph of Amphitrite, all these characteristics are present, notably the dedication to a certain 'friend Vincent'. Although the hypothesis of a gift to the composer Vincent d'Indy, with whom Auguste Rodin founded the International Union of Fine Arts and Letters, seems attractive, the formal identification of the recipient remains impossible in the absence of a mention of a "Vincent" in the lexicon of Rodo's catalogue raisonné (Claude Lapaire, 2001).
This reference monograph, which features an archival photograph of our work, formerly owned by the artist and listed as no. 7 in the catalog, mentions five other reliefs of The Triumph of Amphitrite and notes the existence of a preparatory charcoal drawing preserved at the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire in Geneva (in. 1989-0060 recto).
