ARISTIDE MAILLOL (1861-1944), SKETCH WITH TWO PASTORAL SCENE FROM VIRGIL'S BUCOLICA, GRAPHITE, OUTLINES INCIZED
Aristide Maillol not only distinguished himself as a sculptor and Auguste Rodin's rival, but also produced an important graphic work. The present sheet shows two drawings produced for an edition of Virgil's Eclogues. Initiated by Count Harry Kessler, the project was part of the private press movement promoted by William Morris. Printed in 1926 in only 262 copies in French, with forty-three illustrations by Maillol, it is a masterpiece of bibliophily. Designed as a triptych, the first drawing at the top of the page was used directly for the woodcut of the illustration of page 23 (fig. 1), as can be seen from the mirror inversion and the incisions in the line. The central panel evokes the poetic joust between Menalcas and Damoetas, the two main characters in Eclogues, while the right-hand panel recalls the love affair between Damoetas and Neaera, mentioned in the opening lines of the poem; the left-hand panel refers to the homosexual passions of Menalcas and Mico, described on the following page. The second drawing, at the bottom of the page, has probably not been published.
