A TINTED PLASTER STUDY FOR THE ‘TRIUMPH OF HAPPINESS’ GROUP IN THE GIRONDINS FOUNTAIN ON THE PLACE DES QUINCONCES IN BORDEAUX, UNDER THE DIRECTION OF ACHILLE DUMILÂTRE, CIRCA 1894
From the year 1857, the city of Bordeaux desired the creation of a monumental allegorical fountain project on the Place des Quinconces. A competition was opened in 1858, won by Frédéric Bartholdi (1834-1904), who proposed a design inspired by the Bassin d'Apollon at Versailles. In 1887, Bartholdi was once again commissioned. The sculptor revisited his initial project and created a fountain, the 'Triumphal Chariot of the Garonne'. This endeavor was halted the following year due to lack of funds, but the fountain was eventually purchased by the mayor of Lyon for the Place des Terreaux. A new sculptor, Achille Dumilâtre (1844-1928), was appointed in 1893 to erect a monument-fountain in honor of the Girondin deputies.
Françoise Pascard's 1986 thesis, 'Naissance et Renaissance d'une fontaine', mentions the creation of around thirty preparatory plaster models, which remained as sketches, commissioned before the start of the fountain's construction for the thirteenth international exhibition of the Société Philomatique of Bordeaux in 1895. Only 36 of the 55 commissioned sculptures were ultimately completed within the deadline for the exhibition.
Due to financial constraints and disagreements in the management of the works, the City Council terminated its contract with Dumilâtre in 1895, and Victor Rich (1847-1932) was appointed as the director of the works. Although the principal architect of the project changed, sculptors Félix-Maurice Charpentier (1858-1924) and Gustave Debrie (1842-after 1932) stayed the primary assistants on this project.
Two hypotheses emerge regarding the destination of our group of three putti with a dolphin. It could be one of the plaster models that Achille Dumilâtre created for the 1895 Société Philomatique exhibition, or a preparatory study by Félix Charpentier, who finalized the execution of the Triumph of Happiness. The definitive version of the group visible on the Girondins Fountain does not allow us to determine at which stage of the project our sketch corresponds.
