Further details
According to current research, this unusual, large vase was executed in 1953 and was probably exhibited the following year at the Kunstindustrimuseet in Copenhagen to mark Axel Salto's 65th birthday. In 1956, the vase appeared in the catalog of the above-mentioned exhibition “Neue Form aus Dänemark,” a touring exhibition in Germany and Austria. It is likely, however, that this vase was never included in the exhibition, as the Royal Copenhagen shipping documents do not mention it as one of the eight pieces in their presentation. The vase subsequently disappeared for many decades before recently reappearing on the market.
This work represents an aesthetic break in the work of Axel Salto, usually known for his creations with glazes and surprising colour variations. But it is a response to his tireless quest to render movement and his unrivalled approach of surface textures, making him one of the masters of 20th century ceramics.
