Lot 115 | BIBLE, in German
Estimate value
20000GBP £ 20 000 – 30 000
Biblia, Das ist die gantze heylige Schrifft: Deutsch Auffs new zugericht. Translated by Martin Luther ( - Die Propheten alle Deutsch. - Das New Testament. Wittenberg: Hans Lufft, 1544-1545.
‘The large folio Bible from 1545 is the last one that Luther edited himself. For centuries, its text was the definitive one for the German Protestant Bible. No one dared to make any changes to this final edition of the Bible... Luther's last Bible from 1545 remained inviolable (until the revision in 1858-92)... For a long time, the inviolability also applied to the images in the final edition, the same images that Luther had included in his first full Bible in 1534’ (Schmidt, Luther Bible, 222). In this copy, the title is from the 1545 edition, but the date has been altered to read 1551, and the following 5 leaves comprising the first gathering were supplied at an early stage from the Lufft edition of 1551; the rest of the book collates as per the 1545 edition. VD16 B 2718; STC 89; Darlow-Moule II, 4205; Benzing-Claus 145.2.
