Further details
BONAVENTURA PEETERS THE ELDER, THE END OF THE FLOOD, WITH NOAH'S ARK ATOP MOUNT ARARAT, MONOGRAMMED, OIL ON PANEL
One of the most accomplished painters of shipwrecks, Bonaventura Peeters I (1614-1652) gives himself over here to that which he did best: the depiction of tumultuous waters and their destructive power, dissolving the boundary between sea and sky in the chaos. The painter has, however, infused his composition with a sense of the divine through his technical mastery of light. Bright rays of sunshine break through the dark clouds, highlighting the true subject of the painting, a representation of the Old Testament story of Noah's Ark. Once the rains had ceased on the fortieth day, the ark, which God had commanded be built to save Noah, his family and the animals, came to rest on Mount Ararat (Gn 8, 3-5). The appearance here of the mountain peak breaking through the stormy waters and of the two birds in the centre of the composition symbolise the end of Noah's trials and the return of life to the world.
