Further details
BONAVENTURA PEETERS, AN IMAGINARY COASTAL VIEW, PEN AND BROWN INK, WATERCOLOUR
Thanks to the conspicuous monogram at lower right, this drawing of generous size can be added to the small group of drawings securely attributed to the Antwerp painter who established the family of his family’s reputation, despite his early death (S. Alsteens in De Bruegel à Rubens. Dessins de maîtres issus des collections des Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, exhib. cat., Brussels, Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, 2024-2025, p. 257, under no. 86). Like his brothers Jan and Gillis I and his nephews Bonaventura II and Gillis II, Bonaventura I specialised in marines and coastal views of far-away places – some, as probably the case here, imaginary.
