Lot 28 | Brulefer's Interpretatio in IV libros sententiarum S. Bonaventurae
Estimate value
$ 3 000 – 5 000
Second edition of a commentary on Bonaventure's commentary on Peter Lombard by Stephanus Brulefer—one of the authors mocked by Rabelais in the catalogue of the library of St-Victoire. Brulefer, born Etienne Pillet, was a Franciscan monk who left a promising teaching career in Paris for sojourns in Metz and Mainz before returning to his native Brittany. Brulefer's particular brand of scholasticism was on the wane by the 16th century; by the 1530s, he was already being parodied by Rabelais in the famous catalogue of the library of St-Victoire in Pantagruel ("Poltronismus rerum Italicarum authore magistro Bruslefer"). This edition is assigned to Lazarus de Soardis in part because of the use of a woodcut from his stock—one which also appears in another lot in this sale (see lot TK). Essling 1267; Edit16 CNCE 7642; DE Rhodes, Annali typografici di Lazzaro De' Soardi, 37; Contemporaries of Erasmus I: 205-6.
Four parts in one, quarto (213 x 150mm). 278 leaves. Woodcut of magister with students at head of each book (title detaching, minute marginal worming, occasional stains, some gatherings toned). Later reversed calf, magenta edges (stained, remains of straps). Provenance: marginalia – Los ángeles (early Spanish ownership inscription; given to:) – Fray Luis Ossornio.
