Further details
CARLO BATTAGLIA, A PARTRIDGE; AND A CUCKOO, BODYCOLOUR ON VELLUM, A PAIR
Also known as Carlo Paiola, Battaglia was a still-life painter active in Italy in the 17th century. He produced ornithological and other natural history drawings that entered the prestigious Turinese collection of Emmanuel-Philibert of Savoy, Prince of Carignan (1628-1709). In addition to the record from 1644 of a payment for eight depictions of birds in the Prince’s archives, the subject is also associated with other works in the artist’s œuvre, for instance a drawing of a partridge inscribed on the verso ‘Carlo Battaglia ditt Paieur di Torino, aiuante di camera ordinario di S. A.R.’ in a private collection (A. Griseri, ‘La natura morta in Piemonte’, in La natura morta in Italia, Milan, 1989, I, pp. 146-195).
The present drawings bear witness to the naturalistic, meticulous rendering and careful choice of palette that characterize Battaglia’s work. This creative method links him to other artists in his circle, such as Giovanna Garzoni (1600-1670) and Octavianus Monfort. Another pair of drawings of birds by Battaglia of similar size were sold at Sotheby’s, New York, 5 June 2002, lot 53.
