CHARLES PARROCEL, STUDY OF HORSEMEN, GRAPHITE, PEN AND BROWN INK

This study of horsemen, executed loosely, with light, rapid black chalk lines, can be compared with one of the sketches in the two-volume album Deissins de Cavalliers stamped with the French royal coat of arms and kept at the Musée de l'Armée in Paris (inv. 10859; H. Rihal, ‘Comment Charles Parrocel participe à l'éducation du jeune Louis XV’ in Mélanges autour du dessin en l'honneur d'Emmanuelle Brugerolles, Milan, 2022, p. 180, fig. 2). The drawings in this album, which evoke military life in an encampment, were produced to complete the education of the young Louis XV (1710-1774) during the Regency period in the 1720s, when Charles Parrocel was admitted to the Académie in 1721 as a battle painter. The pointing horseman in the centre of the sheet was engraved to illustrate the collection Différentes attitudes de la cavalerie et de l'infanterie.
