Further details

CHARLES POERSON (CIRCA 1609-1667), KING DAVID, OIL ON CANVAS, INSCRIBED (UPPER LEFT)

King David, second king of Israel and successor to Saul, is of particular importance in the Judeo-Christian tradition. An emblematic figure in biblical history, he is revered for his wisdom, bravery and deep connection with God, as well as for his exploits as a warrior, musician and poet.

In the arts, David’s iconography is dependent on the age at which he is depicted, the changing artistic periods, and varying theological interpretations. In this instance, Charles Poerson (1609-1667) depicts him as an elderly man, crowned and bearded, symbolizing his maturity and experience. His face bears the marks of time, reflecting the wisdom he has acquired over the years. The harp he holds recalls his musical talent and his role in composing the psalms, symbolised as well by the open book held by an angel to the left of the composition. His sovereignty is reinforced by the wearing of a damask cloak, lined with ermine, and the crown, ultimate symbol of his authority and legitimacy as God's chosen king.
