Post lot text
Self-taught, Chiho Aoshima belongs to the Japanese Kaikai Kiki movement founded by Takashi Murakami in 2001 in Tokyo, greatly inspired by Japanese pop culture and its mangas. In Japanese, Kaikai Kiki means “powerful and sensitive,” like an oxymoron describing the essence of the Japanese artistic and spiritual soul, wanting to reconcile past and present, tradition and modernity, collaboration and personal introspection. This constant duality is reflected in Chiho Aoshima's work, which combines touches of humour and seriousness, melancholy and darkness, naturalness and artifice, life and death, nature and technology. Her work regularly stages a kind of dystopian utopia, like a spotlight on the mysterious cycle of life, which is both present and constantly elusive, changing, evolving.
