Further details
‘This title takes its words from the ‘complaintes’, which are narrative songs that are composed after and inspired from the great events of the time. I had initially put a woman's genitals in the bishop's miter. But in view of the reactions it sparked, I hid the sex under flowers. The head on the left is taken from a story by Villiers de l'Isle-Adam. The doctor Velpeau came to see La Pommeraie - on death row - in his cell and asked him to experiment closing and opening his eyes during his execution, as his head would fall into the bran basket. This is why we see this head with one eye open and the other closed. Originally, it was a wafer that was stabbed. Some people complained, so I replaced it with a rose. The girl's gesture comes from what I saw when I was young…’
