« Dans mon tableau « MES FUNERAILLES », j’ai voulu rappeler l’aspect suggestif des photos de nus 1900 se détachant magnifiquement sur fond noir et comme j’estime que le noir est une couleur, à l’encontre de la théorie impressionniste, j’ai réussi par un dépaysement le plus arbitraire possible, l’assaut à la lumière du blanc de la chair des femmes en bas noir avec le fond noir des décors funèbres religieux.
Breton m’a dit que j’avais trouvé là un thème très intéressant « L’amour et la mort ». Avec le choc que procure le dépaysement de sujets subversifs arbitrairement rassemblés, je cherche à conférer une certaine idée de faste pictural par la couleur qui exalte la forme. » Lettre à Rapin, Quiberon, 13 août 1959.

‘In my painting ‘MES FUNERAILLES’, I wanted to evoke the suggestive dimension of the photos of nudes from the 1900s, which stand out magnificently against a black background. Given that I believe that black is a colour – as opposed to what the Impressionists advocated - I succeeded in creating the most arbitrary change of scenery possible, the assault of light on the white flesh of women in black stockings set against the black background of religious funeral decorations.
Breton told me that I had found a very interesting theme there, “Love and Death”. With the shock generated by the change of scenery of subversive subjects arbitrarily brought together, I seek to convey a certain idea of pictorial splendour through colour that extols form'.
