A Daunian olla with geometric painting, 5th century B.C.
Beige-primed receptacle with geometric painting in reddish brown and sienna brown. Phase subgeometric II. Lower part in the form of a slightly flattened sphere with three decorative zones. Four horizontal lines running around the vessel above concentric circles. The centre with two narrow bands of colour (the lower sienna brown, the upper reddish brown) and one broad colour band. "Metopes" in the upper, broad, sienna brown band, filled with reddish brown and alternating with zigzag bands bordered by lines. A broad sienna brown frieze with metopes at the top, above which two narrow colour bands (the lower reddish brown, the upper sienna brown). Between metopes with a chequered pattern in the middle, either almost vertical handles in the shape of a bow or stylised animal heads, each on opposite sides. The handles and animal heads as well as the surrounding metope fields embellished with geometric patterns in alternating shades of reddish and sienna brown. Above the spherical body, the extended, funnel-shaped rim with a large opening in the middle. A star-shaped motif above two colour bands painted on the inside. Three curving lines running between each of the points of the "star". The central colour band once again in reddish brown, contrasted against the rest in sienna brown. Height 25 cm. Width 28 cm. Minimal knocks and a tension crack in the funnel-shaped rim. Otherwise completely preserved. Exceptionally fine example of its kind with unusually elaborate décor. Includes a thermoluminescence expertise, confirming the age of the olla.
