Duan Jianyu's taste for series and narrative reflects in her work the importance of history and the evolution of Chinese society. Through a visual language that deliberately plays with the codes of false naivety, she mixes features from tradition and the post-modern world: both the chickens, an allegory of rural China, and the representation of a Western interior are part of an examination of the reality of a rural population whose identity has been shaken by modernisation. The artist incorporates references from both the Western modernist tradition and Chinese art history, ranging from primitivism and abstract art to socialist realism and the work of early twentieth-century Chinese painters who consciously incorporated Western painting styles into their practices. Her incongruous scenarios are disturbing, challenging as well as touching. Her paintings reveal a banal everyday life where the sweet dream of struggle with an optimistic reality unfolds. Duan Jianyu received the Chinese Contemporary Art Award (CCAA) for best artist in 2010. Many of her works are now on display at the Guggenheim in New York and the M+ Museum in Hong Kong.
