CIRCLE OF SIR PETER PAUL RUBENS, THE ENTOMBMENT, INSCRIBED IN GOLD INK 'POLIDORO DA CARAVAGGIO', BLACK CHALK, PEN AND BROWN INK, BROWN AND GREY WASH, HEIGHTENED WITH WHITE

Probably made by an artist in Rubens' circle, this drawing is influenced by the art of the Italian peninsula, where the master stayed. Between 1600 and 1608, Rubens copied the greatest painters, in particular Caravaggio and his Entombment. The exact influence of the present sheet is difficult to determine: an inscription at the bottom of the drawing points to Polidoro da Caravaggio (to whom the work had previously been attributed), although a Mantuan painter is also conceivable. However, the artist has skillfully recomposed the scene by integrating it into a landscape in a more clearly Flemish style. The treatment of the subject in grisaille produces a sculptural effect, enhanced by the ivory tone of the heightened of white bodycolor.
