Bei dem vorliegenden Gemälde - das in einer anderen Version auch als "Spinola-Rubens" bekannt ist - handelt es sich um eine der zweifellos reizvollsten und schönsten Kompositionen des Antwerpener Meisters Peter Paul Rubens. Deren Popularität drückte sich bereits zu Lebzeiten Rubens' auch in druckgrafischen Reproduktionen aus, u. a. in einem spiegelbildlichen Holzschnitt von Christoffel Jegher (1596 - 1652/53), der mit Rubens zusammenarbeitete und Taufpate seines Sohnes war. Die erste, eigenhändige Version der Komposition entstand vermutlich für einen Genueser Auftraggeber um 1628 und gilt als verschollen. Erhalten hat sich allerdings eine Reihe weiterer Versionen und Repliken, die teilw. vermutlich noch unter Anleitung des Meisters bzw. dessen Beteiligung in der Werkstatt von Rubens entstanden. Max Rooses führt in seiner umfassenden Monographie über Rubens von 1886-92 allein elf Gemälde-Versionen auf. Hierzu zählt u. a. der sog. "Spinola-Rubens" aus dem Besitz der Genueser Patrizierfamilie Spinola (2010 im Dorotheum in Wien versteigert); eine weitere, nicht minder berühmte Version befindet sich in den Bayerischen Staatsgemäldesammlungen (aus der Kurfürstlichen Galerie in München), die in der Alten Pinakothek in München hing, heute in der Staatsgalerie im Neuen Schloss Schleißheim. Die Komplexität von Zuschreibungen an den Meister selbst, dessen Werkstatt, Umkreis und Nachfolger, resultiert aus der Art und Weise wie Gemälde im 17. Jh. entstanden und aus der Arbeitsweise in Rubens Werkstatt. Hierbei schuf Rubens selbst oft mehrere Versionen beliebter Bildschöpfungen, wofür er auch durchaus unterschiedliche Formate und Bildträger verwendete. Von unwesentlicher Bedeutung war es seinerzeit zudem zwischen Original des Meisters und Werkstattbeteiligung zu unterscheiden. Denn es war Auftraggebern im 17. Jh. durchaus bewusst, dass ein bei Rubens bestelltes, größeres Gemälde ganz zweifellos und selbstverständlich nur mit Hilfe von Werkstattmitarbeitern in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Meister entstehen konnten. Charakteristisch für Rubens und seine Werkstatt sind Arbeitsteilung sowie Wiederholungen für gut befundener Bilderfindungen, insbesondere bei einer offenbar populären Komposition wie der vorliegenden. Vermutlich befand sich die Erstversion eine gewisse, längere Zeit als Vorbild in der Werkstatt, wodurch sich die Reihe von Versionen durch Rubens und seine Werkstatt erklären lässt.
