Expédié en Allemagne sous la direction de Bruno Lohse (1911-2007) pour transfert dans la collection d’Hermann Göring (1893-1946), le 11 mars 1942 ;
Retrouvé par la Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives Section, et transféré au Munich Central Collecting Point, (MCCP n° 5726) le 29 juillet 1945 ;
Retourné à Paris le 30 janvier 1946 et restitué à Marguerite Stern, le 19 avril 1946 ;

FRANÇOIS BOUCHER, A RECLINING FEMALE NUDE, BLACK AND WHITE CHALK ON BUFF PAPER

From Jacques Doucet's prestigious collection, this nude academy was used by Louis-Marin Bonnet to produce two pastel engravings in 1768 and 1769: Le réveil de Vénus, in reverse, and L'Amour prie Vénus de lui rendre ses armes in the same direction as the present drawing (Jean-Richard, op. cit.). This drawing belongs to the artist's mature period, in the last decade of his life, when he honoured the title of official painter to King Louis XV. The body is heavier than it is graceful, and here François Boucher belies his title of 'painter of the Graces', as Alastair Laing pointed out in relation to another study of a young nude woman produced in the 1760s (A. Laing, Les dessins de François Boucher, exhib. cat., New York, American Federation of Arts, 2003, p. 113). Although the study does not appear to have been reproduced in a painting, it nonetheless contributed to the spread of François Boucher's art in the eighteenth century through the art of engraving.
