This drawing is typical of Watteau de Lille’s quick portraits in black chalk with white heightening, in which the personality of the sitter is captured in an informal context. The manner of this sheet is particularly reminiscent of a drawing sold at Christie’s, Paris, 29 March 2012, lot 119.
Charles Lenglart (1740-1816), alderman and treasurer of the city of Lille, was a banker and lace merchant in that city, and already an art lover when he met Louis Watteau, father of François, around 1766. His collection, the most important of its time in Northern France, included a large number of works by François Watteau and his father Louis.
