Autograph manuscript, an early draft of the libretto for Verdi's opera Il Corsaro, [c.1845]
In Italian. Title and 26 pages, a fair copy with numerous revisions in pen and pencil, silk wrappers.
An early draft for the libretto of a Verdi opera. Following the success of I due Foscari in 1844, his second collaboration with Piave, Verdi had expressed interest in an opera based on another Byron poem, The Corsair. Piave began work on the libretto in the following year, but competing projects for other works (including I masnadieri and Macbeth) led to delays, and by summer 1846 Piave asked Verdi to return his libretto so that he could offer it elsewhere, to which the composer sent a scandalised response on 27 August 1846: 'Give you back Il corsaro, that Corsaro which has always fascinated me and which I've thought about so much, and which you've put into verse with more than your usual care?'. After further delays, Verdi completed the music by February 1848, and the premiere took place at the Teatro Grande in Trieste on 25 October 1848. The text of the present early draft shows numerous variants from its published version, a measure of the intense collaborative work between librettist and composer.
Piave was Verdi's most significant librettist, and their relationship was one of close friendship in spite of the relentlessly bullying tone of Verdi's surviving letters: they worked together on ten operas between 1844 and 1862, of which the best known are Rigoletto and La traviata.
