Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924)
Autograph manuscript, amendment to the conclusion of Act 3 of Edgar, [early 1892]
Scored for brass, 21 bars on two systems of eight staves, three pages, 380 x 258mm, annotated at head of p.1 'Perorazione atto 3o (ottoni) / (il resto come sta)', on a bifolium, f.2 tipped in, stitched, the last folio blank; first trombone part in an additional stave at the foot of p.3, having been omitted in the preceding system; the concluding four bars extended into the margin and cancelled in blue pencil. Provenance: Musikantiquariat Schneider, Tutzing, catalogue 203 (1976), no. 75; also catalogue 300, no.87.

A late revision to the finale of Puccini's second opera, Edgar. With a libretto by Ferdinando Fontana based on Alfred de Musset's play La Coupe et les lèvres, Edgar is the story of a knight who struggles to choose between two women, Tigrana and Fidelia, representing vice and virtue. Its premiere at La Scala on 21 April 1889 was unsuccessful, and Puccini revised it first in 1890 and again in autumn 1891, when he cut it from four acts to three; a third version was to follow in 1905. The present manuscript dates from the last stages of the second revision: Dieter Schickling dates it to 'no later than early 1892' on the assumption that it is a correction made during the production of the copyist's score. Schickling. Catalogue, 1993, 155-173, 62.B.4.
