Franz Liszt (1811-1886)
Autograph manuscript signed (at end, 'F. Liszt') of the song 'Hohe Liebe' ('In Liebesarmen ruht ihr trunken': S.307), Weimar, 'Im Bett' (in bed), 29 April 1854
For voice and piano, a fair copy with a few erasures and emendations, on three systems of three staves, three pages, 258 x 337mm, including a Nachspiel ad libitum of 13 bars. Cloth boards. Provenance: Peter Cornelius (1824-1874, German composer: Liszt's presentation inscription at end).

A song of earthly and heavenly love, inscribed to his close friend and fellow composer, Peter Cornelius. The text is by Uhland: Liszt's setting was published in 1850 by Kistner as Liebestraum No.1, with a transcription for piano solo appearing simultaneously. The setting here is for soprano or tenor: cf an autograph manuscript at Library of Congress of a version for baritone (ML31 .H43a no. 58), which does not include the ad libitum ending. The composer, poet and journalist Peter Cornelius met Liszt in 1853 and lived in his circle in Weimar over the following five years, becoming an ardent public supporter of the New German School under the composer's influence. Cornelius was himself a very prolific composer of songs, often to texts of his own composition.

[with:] an autograph note signed by Liszt on verso of a printed visiting card of 'L'Abbé Liszt'.
