Further details
GABRIEL DE SAINT-AUBIN, A MAN WRITING OR DRAWING, ANOTHER MAN IN THE BACKGROUND, BLACK CHALK
Best known for his sketches in catalogues of the Salon, guides and sales catalogues, Gabriel de Saint Aubin was a prolific draughtsman. His brother said of him that he drew ‘at all times and in all places’ (E. Dacier, Gabriel de Saint-Aubin, peintre, dessinateur et graveur, 1724-1780, I, Paris, 1929-1931, p. 15). He drew city scenes, theatrical performances and numerous images of everyday life, such as this one, in which he shows two men without interaction. The style and manner of this sheet evoke the woman (Madame de Lombardy according to the inscription) at right on the recto of a study sheet in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. 32752; see Gabriel de Saint-Aubin 1724-1780, exhib. cat., New York, Frick Collection, and Paris, Musée du Louvre, 2007-2008, no. 53, ill.).
