Calligraphy Collection – Birthday Celebration

A pair of hanging scrolls / Scroll, mounted for framing, ink on gold paper / ink on gold-flecked red paper

1. Poem in Regular Script measures 84 x 35.2 cm. (33 1/8 x 137/8 in.)

Inscribed and signed by Gan Hanchen
Dated sixth month, guihai year (1923)
Dedicated to Maogang

‌NOTE:
‌Gan Hanchen, who was initially named Zuofan and styled himself as Pingzong, and the owner of Feiyuan, is a wealthy Cantonese businessman who lived in Shanghai. He was a chief comprador of the Jardine Matheson Company and the owner of the Shanghai Yuyuan, in which he possesses an extensive collection of antiques, paintings, and calligraphy. Gan Hanchen also has a deep friendship with the famous calligrapher Yang Shoujing (1839-1915).

‌‌NOTE:
‌Lao Jingxiu, who styled himself as Nianzu, is a native of Guangzhou, Guangdong. He was a well-known Cantonese businessman in Shanghai during the Republic Era.
