Pupil of the great military painter, Édouard Detaille (1848-1912), and himself an official army painter during the First World War, Georges Scott painted many portraits of the Emperor, for whom he had great admiration. The present sheet, with its large dimensions and the margins mount probably made by the artist, can be compared with a draft of the poster for Abel Gance's film Napoleon of 1927 (Y. Domenech de Cellès, Georges Scott (1873-1943). Itinéraire du dernier peintre militaire français, Lille, 2022, p. 146).
