A French painter and major representative of the Barbizon school, Narcisse Virgilio Díaz de la Peña first won critical acclaim with a galant scene when he made his debut at the Salon in 1831. A master at depicting the variations of light on leaves, he went on to specialise in forest scenes, which were to constitute the bulk of his work. The present drawing, done in pastel, shows a place well known to the Barbizon painters, which Díaz himself painted on several occasions: the place known as Jean-de-Paris in the Gorges d'Apremont in the Fontainebleau forest. The same composition is found in three oil paintings now in private hands (P. and R. Miquel, Narcisse Díaz de la Peña (1807-1876), Vol. II: Catalogue raisonné de l'œuvre peint, n° 1426, no. 1450 and no. 1471), while the Musée d'Orsay holds a different view of the same place (inv. RF 1819).

Shipment of the won lot depends on its size. Small items can be delivered by post. Larger lots are sent by courier. Employees of the auction houses will offer you a wide range to choose from.
