Further details
GEORGES-FRANÇOIS BLONDEL, INTERIOR OF A RELIGIOUS BUILDING, AND INTERIOR OF A TEMPLE, GRAPHITE, PEN AND BLACK INK, GREY WASH, A PAIR
A draughtsman, engraver and architect, Georges-François Blondel trained with his father before embarking on a fruitful trip to Italy, from which he returned marked by the influence of Piranesi. Best known for a series of mezzotints produced in London and published between 1765 and 1767, in the present drawings he shows the same taste for drama and monumentality (J.-F. Mejanès, Piranèse et les français, 1740-1770, May-November 1976, Académie de France à Rome, cat. exp., p. 58). The search for an effect of architectural strangeness is particularly pronounced here, and the construction of the plans suggests a stage set. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has another study of a set by Blondel, dated 1763 (inv. RP-T-1912-17), while in 1971 the Galerie Prouté presented a drawing of a fantasy ruin with the same aedicula as the one on the first floor in the background of the second drawing in the lot (Catalogue ‘Degas’, Galerie Paul Prouté, Paris, 1971, n° 51).
