Further details
GIACINTO CALANDRUCCI, THE HOLY FAMILY WITH SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST AND GOD THE FATHER (RECTO); SKETCHES OF FIGURES, CARICATURES AND INSCRIPTIONS (VERSO), BLACK CHALK, PEN AND BROWN INK
A similar study in pen and ink of the same composition is in the Louvre (inv. 15348). Both sheets are probably preparatory studies for Calandrucci’s altarpiece in San Paolo alla Regola in Rome, The Holy Family with Saint Anne, dated to around 1686 (F. Schultze, ‘Appunti Su Giacinto Calandrucci’, Annali della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, III, no. 1 (1973), p. 217, ill.). Born in Sicily, Calandrucci moved to Rome were he entered the workshop of Carlo Maratti and was deeply influenced by the master’s drawing style.
