Further details
GIOVANNI BATTISTA PIAZZETTA, A STANDING NAKED WOMAN (RECTO); PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG BOY (VERSO); BLACK AND WHITE CHALK, STUMP, ON BLUE PAPER
From this drawing drawn on the front and back of the blue sheet, the exceptional female nude is one of the rare academies of Piazzetta who, following the example of the Carracci in Bologna, had brought together in his Venetian studio a group of students who had come to learn how to draw from a live model. Although studies of nudes were rare and highly prized by the artist, those of women were even more so. The model on this sheet seems to be close to another famous female academy (G. Knox, Piazzetta, Washington, 1983, p. 21, fig. 1). The roundness of this woman's robust body and the way her hair is pulled up into a bun are comparable. On the reverse of the sheet, the young boy probably represents the artist's son Giacomo, portrayed at the age of twenty on another sheet in the Fogg Art Museum (Cambridge, Massachusetts, Knox, op. cit., no. 19). It is also close to a portrait painted, probably at the same time, when he was thirteen, entitled The Beggar in the Art Institute of Chicago (inv. 1930.747), which would date the present work to the same period between 1737 and 1738.
All the stylistic characteristics of Piazzetta's graphic style are present: strong, precise contours, softened by blurring and enhanced with white chalk to illuminate the female model's body and the young boy's clothing. Piazzetta's portraits and expressive heads, as well as academies, were the most sought-after subjects for 18th-century collectors. This double-sided drawing on blue paper brilliantly combines the two iconographic themes dear to Piazzetta.
