Post lot text
GIACINTO GIMIGNANI, PERSEUS GREETS CEPHEUS AND CASSIOPEA BEFORE RESCUING THEIR DAUGHTER ANDROMEDA FROM THE SEA MONSTER, PEN AND BROWN INK, BROWN WASH, HEIGHTENED WITH WHITE, SQUARED IN BLACK CHALK
This drawing is characteristic of Gimignani’s graphic style. The scene represents the arrival of Perseus in the Kingdom of Ethiopia where he will free the beautiful Andromeda. Here Perseus is depicted with King Cepheus of Ethiopia and his wife Queen Cassiopeia, Andromeda’s parents, greeting him. Walter Virtzthum made the attribution in 1965 and compared the sheet with an album of drawings by Gimignani in the Istituto Nazionale per la Grafica, Rome (op. cit.).
Although no painting by Gimignani of this subject exists, Jörg Martin Mertz has proposed to connect the drawing with the record of a payment in 1638 of 50 scudi to Gimignani from Giovanmaria Roscioli, cupbearer of Urban VIII, for a ‘favola di Andromeda’ (op. cit., p. 118).
