PIER FRANCESCO MOLA, ORIENTAL TRAVELLERS PAUSING BY A CLUMB OF TREES (RECTO); AN ARCHITECTURAL SKETCH (VERSO), BLACK AND RED CHALK, PEN AND BROWN INK, BROWN WASH

The composition on the recto has been connected with the figures in the background of Mola’s painting of Saint Baptist Preaching in the Desert, of which different variants exist (Turner, op. cit., p. 82). Although not identical, the figures in the landscape resemble in particular those in the background of the version in the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid, inv. 287 (1983.26) (P. Contini, Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century Italian Painting. The Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, London, 2002, no. 2, ill.).
