Provenance

Commissioned by Joseph Smith, later British Consul in Venice (c.1682-1770), Venice, as one of a series of overdoors for his residence in Venice, Palazzo Balbi, and included in his list of 'Door Pieces' as '11. The church of the Redentore by ditto [i.e., Palladio]’ in his manuscript inventory of the pictures sold with his collection in 1762 to King George III, by whom disposed of, possibly through Richard Dalton.
