GUSTAVE DORÉ, CARICATURE OF OTTO VON BISMARCK, GRAPHITE, SIGNED
This caricature of German Chancellor Otto von Bismark was used for the lithograph illustrating Versailles et Paris en 1871, d’après les dessins originaux de Gustave Doré (‘Versailles and Paris in 1871, based on original drawings by Gustave Doré’), published in Paris in 1907 with a preface by Gabriel Hanotaux of the Académie française. The book, with no fewer than 99 illustrations, echoes the political events of the time: on 26 February 1871, a preliminary peace treaty was signed in Versailles, putting an end to the Franco-Prussian war of 1870. The cartoon of Bismark is entitled ‘Messieurs; je demanderai à la chambre de vouloir bien s’assoir/ aux conclusions du cinquième bureau pour vote des remerciemens/ à notre brave armée...’ (L’Œuvre graphique de Gustave Doré, Paris, 1976, II, p. 1367, ill.).
