Lot 42 | Hans Werner Henze (1926-2012)
Estimate value
£ 2 000 – 3 000
Autograph manuscript signed (at lower left, 'H.W. Henze'), compositional draft for act I of his opera Phaedra, summer 2005
In pencil, short score, 27 bars in one system of three staves, one of six staves and one of four staves, one page, 240 x 500mm, a working manuscript with erasures, cancellations and emendations, headed 'DRAFT', irregularly cut down at lower edge from a larger leaf, annotated on verso 'Skizze Phädra 1. Akt, Arie / Sommer 2005 / Hans Werner Henze'.
A compositional draft for Henze's last opera. The draft is for Phaedra's aria in Act I scene IV, 'Die Schlinge' (The Snare), beginning with the words 'von Wand zu Wand im engen Raum' and ending 'gebrochene Fragmente', also with the entry for Aphrodite (approximately from figures 67 to 70 in the published score).
A 'concert opera' in two acts with a libretto by Christian Lehnert, Phaedra emerged from a period of catastrophic ill-health for the composer, followed by the death of his partner, Fausto Moroni. It was first performed at the Berlin State Opera on 6 September 2007.
