Lot 43 | Joseph Lanner (1801-1843)
Estimate value
£ 2 000 – 3 000
Autograph manuscript signed ('J. Lanner'), orchestration for 16-part orchestra of the overture to Peter Josef von Lindpaintner's opera Der Vampyr, n.d. [c.1830]
A fair copy on two systems of eight staves, 19 pages, 244 x 311mm (contemporary pagination, later foliation), a few minor erasures, titled at the top of first page 'Instrumentirung zum 16 Stimigen Orchester zur Ouverture der Vampyr v. Lindpaintner, arrangirt v. J. Lanner / Mitt Gott', gathered with a ribbon.
A musical arrangement by one of the fathers of the Viennese waltz. Joseph Lanner was the great rival to Johann Strauss I as the earliest proponent of the Viennese waltz: his manuscripts are almost all held by the Vienna Stadt- und Landesbibliothek, and RBH records no autograph manuscripts at auction since 1947. Der Vampyr was first performed at Stuttgart on 21 September 1828: it is Lindpaintner's most successful opera. The libretto is ultimately derived from the 1819 short story 'The Vampyre' by J.W. Polidori, though the printed edition repeats the common misattribution to Lord Byron.
