Estimate value
€ 15 000
Vgl. Claus Zoege von Manteuffe, Die Bildhauerfamilie Zürn 1606-1666, Weißenhorn 1969, sowie Die Waldseer Bildhauer Zürn, Bad Waldsee 1998 (Katalog zur Ausstellung im Museum im Kornhaus, Bad Waldsee 18.4.-1.6.1998).
An Upper Swabian sculpture of St. Sebastian from the workshop of Michael Zürn the Elder (circa 1590 - after 1651)
The fully sculptured statue carved in lime wood, the arms attached separately. Remnants of the original coloured paint. St. Sebastian is shown in front of a dead tree, his left hand raised in a dramatic gesture, a loincloth draped around his hips. Fingers, arrows and part of the left foot have been lost. Knocked, the wood on the back with worming in places. Largely in untouched condition, in need of restoration. Height 82 cm.
Michael Zürn the Elder (circa 1590 - 1651), from Waldsee in Swabia, was a member of the Zürn family of sculptors. Brother of Martin Zürn, son of Hans Zürn the Elder. Presumably apprenticed to his father, he was involved in creating the high altar of the Frauenbergkapelle in Waldsee (completed in 1624). Between 1613 and 1616, as journeymen, Michael Zürn the Elder and Martin Zürn worked on the magnum opus of their brother Jörg Zürn, the high altar of Überlingen Cathedral. From 1636, both were commissioned with the artistic decoration of the parish church in Wasserburg am Inn.
