Further details
HENDRICK AVERCAMP, A FROZEN RIVER NEAR THE A VILLAGE (RECTO); SKETCHES (VERSO), BLACK CHALK, PEN AND BROWN INK, WATERCOLOUR, PEN AND BROWN INK FRAMING LINES HEIGHTENED WITH GOLD, WATERMARK
Instead of skaters and other people enjoying the ice and wintertime, this beautiful example of Avercamp’s enduringly admired winterscapes instead focuses on working people against the backdrop of farm buildings and a village at left. On the river, two fishermen are in discussion, while a mother with two children, the smaller one seated on a sleigh, walk towards the other shore. Signed with the artist’s distinctive initials, as are many of his more finished watercolours, it appears to be sketched from life, and close to several of the drawings in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle (inv. RCIN 906466, RCIN 906472, RCIN 906501; see C. White and C. Crawley, The Dutch and Flemish Drawings of the Fifteenth to the Early Nineteenth Centuries in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen at Windsor Castle, Cambridge, Melbourne and New York, 1994, no. 241, 246, 275, ill.). Avercamp’s drawings are famously difficult to date, but the realistic vein and looser manner of the present sheet suggest it was made in the second half of the artist’s career (M. Schapelhouman, ‘The Drawings. Reflections on an Œuvre’, in Hendrick Avercamp. Master of the Ice Scene, exhib. cat., Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum, and Washington, National Gallery of Art, 2009-2010, p. 96).
