Further details
PAULUS VAN HILLEGAERT I, A WOODED LANDSCAPE, BLACK CHALK, PEN AND BROWN INK, WATERCOLOUR
Although he is mainly known for paintings featuring mounted soldiers, a small number of landscape drawings have been attributed to the Dutch artist Hillegaert, whose works betray the influence of Flemish artists of an earlier generation. Among these drawings, the present work counts among the best and most carefully finished. Similar in the use of watercolour and the typical manner in which the trees are drawn are sheets in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin (inv. KdZ 2775, KdZ 2776; see W. Schulz, Die holländische Landschaftszeichnung, 1600-1700. Hauptwerke aus dem Berliner Kupferstichkabinett, exhib. cat., Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Kupferstichkabinett, 1974, nos. 91, 92, fig. 24); and one recently in the sale Sotheby’s, New York, 22 October 2021, Lot 241.
