Further details
HENDRIK FRANS DE CORT, TOWN AT THE RIVERSIDE (RECTO); SKETCH OF THREE FIGURES (VERSO), PEN AND BLACK INK, BROWN WASH AND WATERCOLOUR (RECTO); GRAPHITE (VERSO)
A court painter in Brussels, he worked between 1776 and 1781 for the Princes de Condé and other high-ranking French families. He painted the Château de Chantilly on several occasions and was admitted to the Académie royale de peinture in 1779, specialising in depiction of châteaux and paying great attention to the surrounding landscapes. He founded a painting academy in Antwerp and left for London in 1790, fleeing the revolutionary unrest then breaking out in Brabant. The artist left us landscapes drawn with great harmony and serenity, such as the View of Pembroke Castle sold at Christie's in New York on 10 January 1992, lot 356. The foreground is sometimes occupied by a watery surface, as here, and the artist shows great sensitivity to the reflections of architecture and trees in the water. No doubt like this river view, the artist made many landscape drawings during his stay in England.
