Further details
JAN PORCELLIS, A MARITIME SCENE WITH SAILING BOATS, PEN AND BROWN INK, GREY AND BROWN WASH, PEN AND BROWN INK FRAMING LINES, WATERMARK
A Flemish painter who emigrated to the Dutch Republic, Jan Porcellis was active at a pivotal time in the history of seascapes, playing a major role in the renewal of the genre. Moving away from simple depictions of fleets, he emphasized the atmospheric dimension of his chosen scenes, creating true maritime landscapes. (J. Walsh, ‘The Dutch Marine Painters Jan and Julius Porcellis, Part 1: Jan's Early Career’, in The Burlington Magazine, Vol. 116, n° 860 (November 1974), p. 654). In the present work the artist chose to highlight the movements of the sea with grey washes, executing rest of the composition in brown ink. A similar composition attributed to Porcellis was sold at Sotheby's on January 29, 2020 (lot 78). The same ruined tower can be seen in the background, however, this latter is executed solely in brown ink, and focuses on the ship landing.
