HENRI-PIERRE PICOU, PORTRAIT OF JEAN-LEON GÉRÔME, GRAPHITE, SIGNED AND WITH INSCRIPTIONS

Thanks to an annotation in the hand of Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904), this drawing can be dated to 1844, when the model returned from his trip to Italy. Picou met Gérôme in Paul Delaroche’s studio at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1836. When Gérôme left for Italy with Delaroche in 1843, Picou joined the studio of his successor Charles Gleyre (1806-1874) (C. Sciama and F. Viguier-Dutheil, op. cit., pp. 34-36). This profile portrait already shows the artist’s taste for classical art. He shared this antique aesthetic with his friends Gustave Boulanger (1824-1888), Jean-Louis Hamon (1821-1874) and Gérôme, which earned them the nickname of Neo-Greeks (ibid., pp. 73-83).
